The half-life of a dynamic QR code created by a registered user has risen from ~5 months (2019 cohort) to 13 months (2024 cohort). Casual anonymous codes stay flat at ~5 months — the gap is the clearest sign QR is professionalising.

India rose from third to second at 7.0%, Germany from sixth to fourth, and Turkey fell from tenth to twenty-fourth. The top 10 countries accounted for 72.6% of 2025 scans. Both years use the same bi-weekly chunked extract method.

How do businesses measure QR code ROI?

Most don't — yet. Only 3.9% of external QR destinations in the QRStuff Q1 2025 creation sample carried visible campaign tracking parameters (UTM, gclid, etc.). However, high-traffic QR programmes show higher tracking rates: 12.5% of the top-scanned destinations carried campaign parameters, a 3.2x lift over the creation average. A separate 2025 marketer survey by Uniqode found only 12% of marketers connect QR scans to revenue.

About this data

Data sources and scope

This report is built from QRStuff's first-party platform data — read-only aggregate extracts from a MySQL replica of the QRStuff production database. Dynamic scan logs span 2009 through 2025. The public data tier contains aggregate-only outputs; no raw URLs, customer names, account IDs, or device identifiers are published.

Data was extracted in three phases: core scan and destination data (June 2025), geography census (June 2026), and lifecycle analyses (June 2026). The underlying SQL is reproducible and versioned for audit purposes.

Key caveats

  • Scan totals are confirmed. Bot/prefetch methodology approved 2026-06-12 (Declan Ahern): user-agent keyword matching plus zero-device-count signal accepted as the first-generation filter. A one-day user-agent diagnostic (2025-01-01) found approximately 3% likely bot/crawler traffic; this has been reviewed and accepted under the approved methodology.
  • Destination stats are sample-based. The Q1 2025 destination analysis covers a 100,000-URL creation sample (63,691 classifiable external destinations), not a full census of all QR codes.
  • Geography window: Country and region breakdowns use comparable full-year 2024 and 2025 geolocated scan extracts (bi-weekly chunked windows from shorturl_log; 2025: ~101.9M scans across 239 countries). The prior 30-day April–May 2024 census is superseded for publication.
  • Visualead-linked accounts are excluded from code-creation and destination cohorts (72,646 client accounts). Google acquisition attribution is a channel-tagging field only and is not excluded from scan counts.
  • Scope wording: Lifecycle and concentration statistics that exclude the anonymous/guest bucket describe codes created by registered users. Platform-wide figures use all-scope data and are labelled accordingly. The longer half-life seen among registered users' codes is a selection effect — it reflects who registers, not a causal benefit of registering.
  • Lawful basis: Legitimate interests confirmed for anonymised aggregate industry statistics (Declan Ahern, 2026-06-12).
