EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542

Battery Passport QR Codes for the EU Battery Regulation

From 18 February 2027, EV batteries, light means of transport batteries, and industrial batteries above 2 kWh placed on the EU market need a digital battery passport that is accessible through a QR code. Create a GS1 Digital Link QR code that links each battery to its passport data.

Scope

Which Batteries Need a Battery Passport?

Electric vehicle batteries

Traction batteries for electric cars and other electric vehicles.

Light means of transport batteries

Batteries for e-bikes, e-scooters, and similar light vehicles.

Industrial batteries above 2 kWh

Rechargeable industrial batteries with a capacity greater than 2 kWh, including stationary storage.

What the Battery Passport QR Code Does

The regulation requires a QR code on the battery that gives access to its passport. A GS1 Digital Link QR code uses the battery's GTIN and serial number as a unique identifier, so each unit links to its own record. The resolver can link the same code to several resources, such as consumer information, repair manuals, and recycling guidance, while the code on the battery never changes.

How to Prepare

1. Confirm GTINs for each battery model with your GS1 Member Organisation. 2. Decide how serial numbers will be assigned and printed at production. 3. Collect passport data such as chemistry, capacity, carbon footprint, and recycled content. 4. Create GS1 Digital Link QR codes and test them on the battery label material before production.
