Unique identifiers
Combine GTIN with batch or serial number to identify a model, a batch, or a single item.
EU ESPR (EU) 2024/1781
The EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation introduces Digital Product Passports that give access to sustainability, repair, and compliance data through a data carrier on the product. Learn what is required and how a GS1 Digital Link QR code can connect products to their passports.
The basics
A Digital Product Passport is a structured digital record about a product. It can include materials, origin, carbon footprint, repair instructions, and end-of-life guidance. A data carrier on the product, such as a QR code, links each item or batch to its record.
Timeline
The ESPR entered into force on 18 July 2024. Passport requirements apply product group by product group, as the European Commission adopts delegated acts. Batteries have their own passport under the EU Battery Regulation from 18 February 2027. See our battery passport QR code guide. Check the delegated act for your product group for exact dates and data requirements.
The data carrier
Combine GTIN with batch or serial number to identify a model, a batch, or a single item.
Link the same code to consumer information, repair manuals, and recycling guidance through GS1 link types.
The same QR code can carry the GTIN for point-of-sale scanning as retailers adopt 2D barcodes.
Create GS1 Digital Link QR codes that connect each product to its passport data.
